NUCLEAR AREA PROJECTS

The projects for 2008-2010 period, either completed or still in development phase, are detailed in next paragraphs.

Projects developed earlier can be seen in the Activity Report for the appropiate period.

“Desarrollo de un proyecto de I+D en los campos de la ingeniería nuclear y termohidráulica”

Organismo Financiador:  Consejo de Seguridad Nacional

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2008-2012

This project raises some relevant topics for nuclear safety and more specifically to the license area. The issues tackled in this project are the application of CFD codes to nuclear safety and participation in the Benchmark organized by the OECD; the analysis of uncertainties in the case of an ATWS in a boiling water reactor plant. First, the input parameters and models of the code that influences the outcome of critical security parameter have been studied, second their uncertainty and how it affects the outcome of critical security parameter have been analyzed. Finally, a methodology to estimate uncertainties in both parameters as models has been developed; the magnitudes averaged thermo-hydraulic hybrid nuclei; and, finally, a scaling methodology, in this case a methodology for scaling experiments carried out in thermo-hydraulic facilities to plants or prototypes of nuclear power plants has been developed.

“Experimentación y modelación en termo-hidráulica de sistemas bifásicos para sistemas energéticos y códigos de seguridad nuclear.”

Organismo Financiador:  Ministerio de Educación

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2007-2011

This project tackled several experiments to measure the evolution in the two-phase flow in vertical channels for different mass flow rates of gas and liquid at the entrance to them. Physical magnitudes measured at different radial and axial positions were: holes fraction, Sauter average radius, interfacial velocity, fluid velocity, interfacial area concentration, intensity of turbulence.

Conductivity probes with 2 and 4 tips to measure the holes fraction, velocity and interfacial area concentration were developed. Likewise, a calculation code for the interpretation of experiments was developed.

“Realización y modelación de experimentos de efectos separados con flujo bifásico relevantes para la seguridad de reactores nucleares”

Organismo Financiador:  Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2011-2014

This project of the R & D national Plan wants to perform several experiments of two-phase flow that are relevant to the safety of reactors, among the selected experiment there are the following: 1. jet discharges of gas in pools. In this case, a facility called SPES1 has been set up, which consists of a stainless steel pool with gas injector at different heights and whose front and rear wall are transparent. High speed cameras to film the gas discharges in the pool has been used and images to obtain the processing have been digitized. Experiments for different gas mass flow rates and different nozzle diameters have been conducted; 2. jet discharges of liquid on the surface free of a moving fluid. This experiment was carried out to see the effect that a safety injection in the cold phase and a drag vapor can cause. It will be held at the SPES2 facility; and, 3. experiments of water flows and concurrent and counter current gas. This experiment will be carried out with air and steam in order to see the changes experienced by the gas-liquid inter-phase at different speeds of fluid and how the rate of direct condensation is affected. The installation of a steam boiler to carry out experiments related to direct condensation is being developed.

“Aplicaciones y mejoras del monitor SMART, del código LAPUR y estudio de nuevos desarrollos.”

Organismo Financiador:  Iberdrola Ingeniería y Construcción, SAU

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2008-2009

This project works on the improvement of SMART monitor developed by the TIN group of the UPV in collaboration with the group IBERINCO of IBERDROLA. SMART Monitor is capable of analyzing signals from a BWR reactor and to characterize its stability. In this case a series of improvements to the monitor such as more efficient filters that do not distort the signal because they include equalizers have been developed. Also algorithms to the synthetic generation of signals with noise whose stability parameters are known in advance to see if the monitor is able to determine the stability characteristics of those signals to obtain the licensing of the SMART Monitor have been developed.

“Acuerdo específico de Colaboración entre CIEMAT Y UPV”

Organismo Financiador:  CIEMAT

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2009-2013

The agreement includes a series of works among which the improvement of models SPARC code is included. This code tries to predict the retention of aerosols carried by a flow of gas from a rupture in a tube of a steam generator or from a shock in a pool. The study of the thermo-hydraulic of liquid metals is also included in this collaboration.

“European Research Programme for the Transmutation of High Level Nuclear Waste in Accelerator Driven System”

Organismo Financiador:  Comisión Europea

Investigador Principal: J. L. Muñoz-Cobo

Periodo de ejecución: 2005-2010

In this European Project techniques to control reactivity from measurements of Rossi-alpha and Feynman variance are developed. The experiments were carried out in a sub-critical set in Minsk.
